The Journal of All Power & Plant Chemistry Areas

Since 1999, the PPCHEM® journal has become established as an international scientific and technical journal for users in the entire power generation market. Water treatment and cycle chemistry are not only challenges in power generation but also in all industrial processes where water or steam is used.

The PPCHEM® journal serves all users who are involved in efforts to increase the reliability, availability, economic viability, and the operational and environmental safety of these processes.

Editor's Comment

Dear PPCHEM readers:

With this second issue of 2026, PPCHEM® continues its freshly begun journey as a digital‑only publication. The positive feedback from our readers that we have received so far reinforces our commitment to providing the international power & plant chemistry community with a modern platform for the exchange of experience and knowledge.

The technical papers in this issue address practical challenges in power & plant chemistry and operation. A case study investigates polymer fouling as the root cause of selective calcium leakage in a demineralization system and demonstrates how structured diagnostics and targeted resin treatment can successfully restore performance. Contributions of this kind underscore the importance of informed diagnostics and experience‑based problem solving.

Another article critically examines widespread misconceptions surrounding the use of alkalizing amines in high‑pressure water‑steam cycles. Using a practical case history, it addresses the incorrect assumption that alkalizing amines can generally replace ammonia for feedwater pH control in utility systems. The discussion highlights potential operational risks and emphasizes the need for careful selection of chemistry programs based on pressure level, system design, established best practices, and international guidance documents.

In addition, this issue contains two reports on power plant chemistry related-events in which PPCHEM® is involved. A short press release from GSAPWS summarizes the highlights and key outcomes of the association's annual meeting held in early March 2026.

A more detailed report is provided on the PPCHEM Seminar "Monitoring and Avoidance of Chemical Issues in Water‑Steam Cycles," held in Erfurt, Germany. The seminar once again highlighted the central role of sound water and steam chemistry control in the safe, efficient, and economical operation of power plants.

Information on current conferences, seminars, and other PPCHEM® activities is continuously updated on the PPCHEM AG website (www.ppchem.com).

I hope you enjoy reading this issue and find its content informative and practically relevant.

Best regards,

Tapio Werder

A Brief History of the PPCHEM® Journal

First published in July 1999 as the PowerPlant Chemistry Journal, PPCHEM has grown over 25 years and more than 1 000 articles into a leading international resource for the power generation community.

After starting in Germany, production moved to Switzerland in 2009, but the journal's mission has remained unchanged. In 2026, PPCHEM transitioned to an exclusively digital format to better serve its global readership.

We are proud of the journal's long-standing reputation and the continued contributions of our loyal authors, readers, and advisory board members who have made this success possible.
