ABSTRACT
This article examines the spread of technical misconceptions on platforms such as LinkedIn regarding water-steam cycle chemistry in high-pressure utility systems. It focuses on the incorrect claim that alkalizing amines can replace ammonia for feedwater pH control, supported by a practical case history.
While alkalizing amines have valid applications, their use as a direct substitute in high-pressure units can introduce operational risks, highlighting the importance of proper chemical selection and adherence to industry best practices. Alkalizing amines have a place in many steam generation applications, particularly for lower- and intermediate-pressure boilers, condensate return systems of industrial plants, and nuclear power plant secondary cycles. For utility heat-recovery steam generator (HRSG) feedwater chemistry control, an ammonia-amine blend may be beneficial in minimizing two-phase FAC. However, careful evaluation and research are needed when selecting a program.
